How trees affect urban air quality: It depends on the source

چکیده

Large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to systematically analyse the impacts of trees on air quality in idealised street canyons. The LES tree model includes radiation, transpiration, drag and deposition effects. superposition background concentrations local emissions construct realistic urban scenarios for fine particulate matter (PM2.5) nitrogen oxides (NOx). Both neutral convective atmospheric conditions are considered assess importance buoyancy effects role shading transpiration. Tree impact shown be driven by balance between rate at which they actively remove pollutants from (deposition) way alter transport within out canyon (dispersion). For pollutant species or types where concentration field dominated levels (such as PM2.5), will generally dominate thus improve. emission sources (e.g. NOx a busy road), dispersion become more prominent can lead elevated mixing exchange significantly inhibited. How urban structure can affect city sustainability from an air quality perspective

Despite the progress made in controlling local air pollution, urban areas show increasing signs of environmental stress and air quality is one of the major concerns. The findings of several studies provide evidence that the shape of a city and the land use distribution determine the location of emission sources and the pattern of urban traffic, affecting urban air quality. This work focuses on ...

Working and learning together: good quality care depends on it, but how can we achieve it?

Educating healthcare professionals is a key issue in the provision of quality healthcare services, and interprofessional education (IPE) has been proposed as a means of meeting this challenge. Evidence that collaborative working can be essential for good clinical outcomes underpins the real need to find out how best to develop a work force that can work together effectively. We identify barrier...

How the quality of a received EPR pair depends on the distances from an EPR source?

Let an EPR source which generates maximally entangled pairs be located so that it has distances L1 and L2 to two users. After taking into account various effects like loss of photons, deficiencies in the source and detectors, an entangled pair traveling through the channel may loose its perfect correlation due to errors in the channel. How the entanglement of the received pair depends on the ab...

Measuring the Impact of Urban Street Trees on Air Quality and Respiratory Illness

New streams of data enable us to associate physical objects with rich multi-dimensional data on the urban environment. This study presents how open data integration can contribute to deeper insights into urban ecology. We analyze street trees in New York City (NYC) with cross-domain data integration methods by combining crowd-sourced tree census data which includes geolocation, species, size, a...
